Media Representation of Celebrities in Late-night Talk Show Format

This diploma thesis deals with the media representation of celebrities, as it is designed within the framework of the adopted American television format of the late-night talk show. In the first part of the thesis, attention is focused on problems of understanding of the phenomenon of celebrities by various authors, as well as on the development of the late-night talk show itself and its characteristic features. The theoretical starting point is the theory of representation (Hall), three levels of representation (Trampota) and social construction of reality (Berger, Luckmann). The method of critical discourse analysis is chosen for the research and the four principles for the analysis are described: commoditization, infotainment, personalization, congeniality. The practical part presents an analysis of the typical representation of celebrities due to the principles mentioned above in selected talk shows which were broadcast in English and Czech languages in 2015-2016, namely American The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Czech Jan Kraus Show. Talk show as a TV genre entertaining both the USA and the Czech Republic

The topic of this Bachelor's thesis, Talk show as a TV genre entertaining the USA and the Czech Republic, is talk show as a genre connected with the origin and development of american TV entertainment, that, after the Velvet Revolution, got into our own televisions, as well. The thesis is divided into two sections - theoretical and practical. In the theoretical section, the thesis deals with the definiton and interpretation of the talk show concept, then it deals with talk show as both a TV genre and a format, circumscribes the key identification characteristics of this genre and categorises it to three main subgenres - late-night talk show, daytime talk show and informational talk show. Other fields of interest of this thesis are also genres that preceded the talk show genre or its elements. Theoretical section is then concluded by the history of talk show in the United States, the country of origin of this genre, along with its footprint in the Czech media landscape. Practical section then aims for recognition of any correspondences and differences in schemes of late-night talk show between the Czech Republic and the USA, using comparative analysis. Representing the Czech talk show in the analysis is Show Jana Krause, representing the American talk show is then The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

American late-night talk show

This thesis focuses on the history of talk show in USA with emphasis on its specific form, which is late-night talk show. The first chapter focuses on the creation of new television networks and the overall state of american broadcasting during the first era of the television talk show format. The thesis briefly describes radio broadcasting which served not only as an important source of inspiration for television but also as a starting platform for most talk show hosts. Next chapter theoretically approaches talk show as a format and establishes some of the important aspects that a talk show should fulfill. This chapter is followed by a historical insight into how talk show has evolved from the early fifties until the dawn of a new millennium. It is separated into several time periods, each of which are characterized by particular television personalities, as well as examples of important talk shows that had a greater impact on the talk show as a format. The last chapter focuses on analyzing several late-night talk shows that are still on air. These talk shows are - Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Chelsea Lately.
